Economic cooperation with South Africa

Federal Councilor Guy Parmelin has signed a memorandum of understanding for a programme supporting sustainable development of South Africa's largest cities. These are considered to be the engines of the country's economic growth.

Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin and South African Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola sign a memorandum of understanding for a programme supporting the sustainable development of South Africa's largest cities.

This is the third phase of the Cities Support Programme, in which Swiss partners such as ETH Zurich are also participating. The first two phases have already achieved excellent results. For example, a comprehensive reform has been initiated to professionalize public services – particularly in the areas of water and electricity – and make them more profitable. The programme is a recognized example of successful economic cooperation between South Africa and Switzerland.
