Peru

Peru is a priority country for SECO's economic cooperation and development efforts and Switzerland's third most important trade partner in Latin America. With a rich history of political complexity and economic growth, Peru still faces significant challenges in a rapidly changing global landscape, including persistent poverty and inequality, high informality, the impact of climate change and the need to strengthen public institutions for sustainable development. The Cooperation Programme 2025-2028 aims to support Peru's sustainable economic growth by aligning with OECD standards and ensuring that development is effective, inclusive and responsive to the country's unique challenges.

Supporting the country in its efforts to align with OECD standards for sustainable economic growth

As Peru navigates a rapidly changing global landscape, it encounters significant challenges that threaten its progress, such as persistent poverty and inequality, the impacts of climate change, and the necessity to strengthen public institutions for sustainable development. These challenges highlight the urgency for reforms and provide a unique opportunity for transformative change. The OECD accession process presents a roadmap for Peru to implement key economic reforms and align with international best practices. By embracing these reforms, Peru can attract greater foreign direct investment, driving economic growth and creating new and better jobs. This proactive approach enhances Peru's competitiveness in the global market, paving the way for long-term prosperity and improved living standards for its citizens.

Peru is a priority country of SECO’s economic cooperation and development. The Cooperation Programme Peru 2025-2028 focuses on supporting sustainable economic growth in Peru by working towards OECD standards. It aims to enhance the quality of life for all Peruvians while ensuring that economic development aligns with international norms and practices. By prioritizing reforms that meet OECD standards, the programme establishes a clear framework for Switzerland’s economic development cooperation in Peru, facilitating collaboration with national and international partners. Furthermore, this approach encourages Peru to incorporate its own priorities and take action on important recommendations as it works towards OECD membership.

The Cooperation Programme 2025-2028 prioritizes two key thematic areas that will guide these efforts:

Switzerland's economic cooperation with Peru, its third-largest trading partner in Latin America, is crucial for advancing Swiss economic interests. By enhancing Peru's regulatory framework and business environment, Switzerland promotes trade, investment, and export diversification, facilitating access for Swiss companies and maximizing the benefits of the EFTA Free Trade Agreement. Furthermore, supporting Peru's journey towards OECD standards aligns with Switzerland's commitment to multilateralism and high international standards in governance and economic practices.
