Federal Council postpones update of tariff preferences for developing countries

Bern, April 16, 2025 — On April 16, 2025, the Federal Council decided to postpone the entry into force of the updated Swiss system of unilateral tariff preferences for developing countries to April 1, 2026. This decision gives economic operators additional time to implement the necessary adjustments.

Switzerland grants unilateral tariff preferences to developing countries under its Generalized System of Preferences (GSP). On January 29, the Federal Council decided to update the current system to better reflect changes in the status of various developing countries in recent years. This update was originally scheduled to take effect on May 1, 2025.

On April 16, 2025, the Federal Council decided to postpone the implementation date of the update to April 1, 2026. This will ensure that economic stakeholders have sufficient time to adapt to the changes introduced by the update.
