Conference on Impact Bonds and other pay-
for-success mechanisms: pathways to scale,
18 January, 2018, Zurich

The conference allowed to discuss Impact Bonds and related financing mechanisms, gain insights about their potential for scale, and how they can help achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. The aim of the event was to provide the tools necessary to make informed decisions about how and when to support an Impact Bond or related financing mechanism. The conference has been organized by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the UBS Optimus Foundation. It was hosted by the UBS Conference Center in Zurich.

The conference was opened by Ms. Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen-Fleisch, Secretary of State, SECO and Mr. Sergio P. Ermotti, Group CEO at UBS, and was closed by Dr. Manuel Sager, Director SDC and Mr. Hubertus Kuelps, Global Head of UBS and Society.

Conference content

Early results from the first Social Impact Bond in a developing country (Colombia) have been presented. In addition, Humanitarian Impact Bonds, and the Maternal and Newborn Health DIB in Rajasthan as well as the Village Enterprise Development Impact Bond were presented. The session on Social Impact Incentives has showcased different innovative pay-for-success mechanisms.

Interactive discussions took place around issues such as the potential for scaling innovative and results-based financing mechanisms, the ethics of such mechanisms in relation to the socially disadvantaged, and how to overcome different challenges currently faced in the sector.
